This St-Estèphe wine is marked by blackberry and cassis flavors, structured tannins, and a long, savory finish.
Its color is deep, purple and bright. After an initial nose that is still a bit closed, it later opens up with elegant notes of fresh fruit, blackcurrant buds and eucalyptus that reveal themselves with agitation. On the palate, the 2012 Chateau Montrose is fresh and upfront. Its mid-palate is relatively full, powerful and silky. Its finish is incredibly long with notes of brioche and licorice. This 2012 vintage of the Saint-Estèphe appellation is intense and racy.
In 1778, Etienne-Théodore Dumoulin bought from Alexandre de Ségur a parcel of the Calon estate, perfectly situated, overlooking the Gironde. The estate was then covered with heather that bloomed pink flowers in spring. Hence the name Montrose. His son Etienne created the vineyard, planted the vines, built the Château Montrose residence in 1825 and gradually expanded the estate. Success was not long in coming: in the 1855 classification, the wine was consecrated as the 2nd classified growth of the Médoc. The estate then had several owners before being acquired in 1896 by Louis Charmolüe, who bought it from his father-in-law Jean Hostein (who then owned Cos d'Estournel). The family remained in charge throughout the 20th century, represented until 2006 by Jean-Louis Charmolüe. A new page was turned when Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought this legendary wine with the 1990 vintage.
